There was some hesitation from my side… To this question from the lady behind the counter. She was the lady running the store that was neighboring to our place.
Our machines had arrived two days ago. They were beautiful, very shiny and heavy. Packed in big boxes with our names on it. The machines had already been paid for when we rented the place 4 months ago. Back then, we were almost sure the machines would be standing in the facility within a month. Boy were we wrong…
Anyway the machines were here now and apparently not only we started believing in the fact that we were going to finally start our business, but also the lady from our neighbors’…
The question she had asked was a very simple one, and could be answered with a simple ‘yes’. But on the other hand there was so much to say on this topic.
My education had taught me about the biology of food in humans. It was all biology, chemistry and mathematics. Very simple and basic chemical reactions that led to conversion of food you ate into energy molecules which could be used by processes inside your cells to keep you living.
Indeed during the first year of my study in Amsterdam I had learnt all the details of how molecules come together to form cells, how cells differentiate and form tissues and how tissues get together to form organs and finally, how organ systems would work together to get to a perfectly working machine.
In the years following I have treated many patients with problems of the digestive tract, sometimes as part of a disease, and sometimes as a consequence of an operation I had performed on them. Most of the daily interventions in clinical patients consists of controlling the balance of their fluid intake, correcting the deficient minerals, vitamins and sometimes even giving additional food supplements.
The easiest to manage patients are the ones at the intensive care unit that are completely on life support. These patients receive a complete mix of nutrients in a big bag of white fluid containing all the things a human needs. When a patient needs more, we will open up the tap of the white fluid bag and when someone needs less, we administer less of the magic white fluid.
When patients wake up and are able to control themselves, we prescribe them some of these (disgusting hospital food) menus with certain restrictions or extras in them. However here the problem of the human psychology starts to play its role. We can not exactly administer the amounts we wish to, since some people take more and some take less than what we wish them to have.
Losing or gaining weight is very similar to how we treat patients: it comes down to a very simple mathematical equation: What goes in, has to get out.
You have to keep in mind a few basic mechanisms of how the body handles certain nutrients and energy.
- An excess of energy intake is (very efficiently) converted to fats.
- A shortage of energy intake is corrected by breaking down proteins and fats via very complex biochemical mechanisms to supply the energy the body needs.
- A shortage of intake of certain essential building blocks, such as essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins will lead to problems in the perfect machine called the human body.
- You should calculate or note the amount of energy your body needs. Even though there are many variables, for simplicity you can calculate this via some or other online calculator depending on your weight and height.
- If you want to loose weight, you should make sure to get less calories than what you calculated in point 1.
- If you want to stay healthy, you should keep taking in the essential building blocks every body needs.
- Do not forget that your body is a perfect machine but with a mind that has an own will. Most people find it incredibly hard to break with habits that they have had for years. If you really want to keep to the target you set, keep to it. You are the only one who can realise this.
I told the lady from the neighbor store the following:
‘ actually our product is targeted at people that want a conveniently simple and complete, tasty meal and pay for it less than for a hamburger, a bag of French fries with mayonnaise or a cup of coffee. And all this without the hassle of spending time doing the groceries and preparing the ingredients into something edible.
Every bag contains everything the body needs for one meal. It is up to you. If you wish to gain weight, you should take more calories than your body requires every meal. If you wish to loose weight, you would have to take less calories than you would require. The powder in the bag is real food and keeps you full when consumed, just as any other meal would do.
It is a simple equation. You can calculate how much energy your body needs in calories. Simply use less calories than what you have calculated for yourself. The only thing that is unpredictable, is the human psychology. You have to be convinced that you do not require more than what you need.
Our product is developed to comply with the European union food regulation directive for meal replacements and as such can be used as a complete meal.
I would advise you to use the powder bags as a breakfast and lunch but consume a home made classical dinner. You should calculate the energy you consume and keep this within limits. However, if you decide to use Powder Matter three times a day without any additional classic foods for weight loss as a purpose, we would advise you to use some additional vitamin and mineral supplements ‘
The lady seemed impressed and told me she hoped we would produce our Powder Matter before the summer ended. She was not the only one with the same wish.
